5 tips for window cleaning without streaks

Cleaning windows without streaks: it’s all in the details. Who else to ask for tips but our own cleaning masters? We sat down with Tom, expert window cleaner, to extract his best window-cleaning tips.

1. Replace your squeegee timely

“Many people don’t know this, but the rubber blade on your window squeegee can indeed wear out,” Tom explains. “The better the rubber blade on the window squeegee, the better your technique.” So taking care of your equipment from time to time is the best advice for cleaning your windows without streaks.

3. It’s all in the technique

Wiping away the water, you never do it in straight lines. “Always move the window squeegee in a smooth S-shape, never straight down or to the side. That way, you also get less ‘water runners’ on the edges. After soaping your window pane, go along the sides with a sponge which will largely prevent ‘water runners’ even before you wipe away the water.”

3. Less is more

Proper dosing is crucial. Tom explains: “We just use washing-up liquid. It foams well, but you have to be careful not to use too much. If the temperature is too high or the sun shines on the window, the soap bubbles dry up quickly, which also causes staining.” For the perfect ratio, dilute your detergent in a spray bottle with water.

4. Stop in time

After you wipe away the water, it is tempting to go over it with a cloth again. “Definitely don’t do this. You can use a cloth to go over the edges of the window. But a squeegee should be sufficient to remove the water.”

5. Rain or sunshine

Professional window cleaners don’t just sit at home when it rains. “Actually, rain is not dirty. We often get that comment during a job, that the windows will soon be dirty again. That is not true. So it is perfectly possible to clean your windows even in a rainy period.”
